Murray Edwards College, Art Café and Bar
Murray Edwards College was founded in 1954 to make room for more women at Cambridge University. Designed in 1962 by Chamberlain Powell and Bonn, architects of the Barbican in London. The iconic Brutalist buildings were designed as a soaring, light-filled physical manifesto for the education of women.
We have refurbished and designed many rooms in this wonderful college, including their student Art Café and Bar, which backs onto the infamous Fountain Court. We carried out a light touch refurbishment which included refurbishing the existing lights, repairing the bar and solid teak flooring, with the addition of new carpets and furnishings. This room has a rotating display of artwork curated by the college.
The college proudly houses the Women's Art Collection - the largest collection of art by women in Europe. Founded in 1986, it includes over 600 works by leading international artists, including Dame Paula Rego, Maggi Hambling CBE, Lubaina Himid CBE , Judy Chicago, and our founder Eve’s mother, Phyllis Floyd.
