We were appointed to work with Magdalene College and Níall McLaughlin Architects on the design, specification and supply of furniture to their iconic New College Library, which was the winner of the 2022 RIBA Stirling Prize.
The interior spaces are made from a cross-laminated timber structure with hardwood shelves and tables. The intention is for all of the key features to be perceived as an inter-woven set of elements for which the loose furniture is an integral part.
EWD worked closely with the college bursar and their building team as well as the project architect to select furniture which would sit in harmony with this wonderful scheme.
The brief was to select pieces which are classic in appearance, ergonomic and hardwearing. The main library and reading room chairs are by Hans Wegner, made from oak with leather seats, and other chairs in green wool with a ladder back design. Height-adjustable, lightweight, understated reading chairs were specified as well. Beautiful, classic furniture maintains its value. It is long lasting and sustainable - thus ensuring its own legevity.
