The Academy of Medical Sciences, London

The Academy of Medical Sciences is based at 41 Portland Place, a notable Georgian townhouse built in 1775 and Grade ll* Listed. Designed by the architect Robert Adam, in the neoclassical style, the building originally served as a private residence. It showcases Adam’s signature architectural style, which emphasizes classical proportions, elegant details, and symmetry.

Key features of our work include a complete redesign of the lighting throughout; this involved a sensitive design ensuring a variety of scenes for the Institute’s varied events. A sophisticated lighting scheme powered by Casambi technologies, allows precise lighting control and colour changing adjustability. Historic lights were rewired, updated and reinstated.

An updated historic colour scheme, paired with contemporary furniture, bespoke joinery and artwork, revitalizes the space while respecting its architectural legacy. Our scope also included the signage and wayfinding design including electronic room booking technology. The wider scope included upgrades to AV, roof and window repairs and external decoration.

We have transformed the building into a functional, inviting environment that seamlessly integrates modern technology ;the building retains its classic architectural features, elegant rooms and intricate detailing, such as Adam’s trademark plasterwork and ornamental features. Today, it combines the historical significance of its Georgian roots with the needs of a modern scientific institution.
